First Flights
Ric Womersley

Well it all started on Xmas day when I was opening what seemed to be this years beano annual, but no it was my new pap top 80 manual wow!!! Great I thought I opened my next prezzi and it was a nice new helmet and head set, then the next it was a pair of flying boots after
that dad guided me into the garage, the door seemed to take a life time to open.

And there the beast was a shiny top 80 glaring at me. Me and dad got it tied upon the rafters then I got sat in it and was day dreaming of the days when I would be skimming over the clouds
taking in the wonderful sights of below.

After a few minutes of nagging I realised that I wouldn't be able to fly until Thursday. so when Wednesday day night came I was sat trawling through all the different weather forecasts trying to find the best one but no they all gave wet and bad visibility b***r.

Thursday morning came the weather men seemed to be right until me and dad drove by Paul Haxbys field to see Mike Brown taking of that was it was my turn to take to the sky's. And before long was strapped into my motor hooked up to my advance alpha 3 which I got for my bday a few months before. The wind was 2-3 mph which meant a forward so after a yell and a powerful run the wing was above my head I didn't know why but all I could hear was POWER POWER POWER

I looked up and saw dad screaming down the radio I squeezed the throttle and in seconds was running full speed I felt light but wasn't flying yet so just a little amount of pressure on the brakes saw me climbing away from the deck I shouted my loudest “YEEEEEHHHAAAAAAARRRRRRGHHHHHHHH"

50 ft up I had a little wiggle to try and get into my seat nothing happened I let go of one brake and tried to shuffle back in but no I let go of both brakes still couldn't get in dam I'm goner have to land. I eased of the throttle at 100 ft and turned downwind I was cruising along feeling as though there is only me left on the earth when I hear Mike Brown and Paul Haxby on the radio flying from their field 3 miles south of mine.

Oh well its time to cut the engine and glide down I was 3 feet above the ground and pulled a progressive flare on the brakes, followed by a gentle slow touch down I turned around let the wing fall down and I had the biggest smile ever.

Many thanks to Steve radical Scruton for leaving Sadie behind to come and help and the people that aspired me Chris Dawes Paul Haxby the people that I met at the nats 06 Michel Carnet Julius and the talented flyers at the homegrown Pascal Pete Searle and many more Oh yer I better mention me dad who taken me with him flying for the past 10 years. And my mum flight control.
